What was published
Google published the September Android Security Bulletin on 8 September, updating it on 16 September. It states that patch levels of 2026-09-05 or later address all issues described in that bulletin. The most severe include critical issues in the System component.
What to check
Confirm the installed security patch level and consult the device manufacturer's update information. Android platform, manufacturer and Google Play system updates are related but separate parts of the update picture. The bulletin's date in its URL should not be confused with its publication date or a handset's installed state.
Forensic focus
Record the manufacturer, model, OS build and security patch level at acquisition. Document unsupported devices and unavailable updates. If the device is evidence in an active case, agree the preservation and remediation sequence before changing it. A patch-level comparison is an exposure assessment, not a malware diagnosis.
